Post operative instructions for hair transplant clients
Post-Operative Care Overview
Congratulations on completing your hair transplant procedure. The success of your transplant depends significantly on how well you care for the newly implanted grafts during the recovery period. Please follow these detailed instructions to ensure the best possible results and to maintain the health of your scalp.
Days 0 - 5: The Critical Recovery Phase
During the first few days, the grafts are at their most vulnerable. It is essential to protect the recipient area from any trauma or dehydration.
- Keep the Area Moist: To ensure graft survival, you must keep the recipient area hydrated. Use the provided saline spray every 30 to 60 minutes during waking hours. This prevents the formation of heavy scabs and keeps the environment optimal for healing.
- Sleeping Position: Sleep with your head elevated at a 45-degree angle for the first three nights. Using a travel pillow or extra pillows can help prevent you from rolling over and rubbing the grafts against the bedding.
- Avoid Touching: Do not touch, scratch, or pick at the recipient area. Even slight pressure can dislodge a graft during this phase.
- Activity Levels: Rest as much as possible. Avoid any strenuous activity, bending over, or lifting heavy objects, as these can increase blood pressure in the scalp.
- Clinic Contact: If you experience excessive bleeding or swelling that reaches the eyes, please contact our clinic immediately or visit us at Amar hospital Patiala.
Days 5 - 21: The Healing Phase
As you move into the second and third weeks, the grafts become more secure, but the scalp still requires gentle handling.
- Gentle Washing: You may begin washing your hair gently. Use a cup to pour lukewarm water mixed with a mild, pH-balanced shampoo over the area. Do not place the scalp directly under a high-pressure showerhead.
- Scab Management: Scabs will naturally begin to form and eventually flake off. It is vital that you do not pick at them; let them fall off naturally during the washing process.
- Moisture Maintenance: While the frequency of saline spraying can be reduced, ensure the scalp does not feel overly tight or dry.
- Light Exercise: You may resume light walking, but continue to avoid heavy weightlifting, swimming in chlorinated pools, or contact sports.
Beyond 21 Days: Long-Term Care and Growth
After three weeks, the grafts are generally well-anchored, and you can begin returning to your normal routine.
- Normal Hair Care: You can typically resume your regular showering routine and use your preferred hair products, unless otherwise advised by our specialists.
- The Shedding Phase: Do not be alarmed if the transplanted hairs begin to fall out between weeks 3 and 8. This is a normal part of the process known as "shock loss." The roots remain healthy beneath the skin, and new growth will begin in a few months.
- Sun Protection: Protect your scalp from direct sunlight for at least 3 to 6 months. Wear a loose-fitting hat when outdoors to prevent sunburn on the healing tissue.
- Follow-Up Appointments: Ensure you attend all scheduled follow-up visits so we can monitor your progress and the density of the new growth.
