Diabetic Foot Care: Protect Your Feet, Prevent Serious Problems

By Dr Sumit Toor

What is Diabetic Foot?

When you have diabetes, high blood sugar levels can cause two main problems for your feet. First, it can damage the nerves, making it hard for you to feel pain, cold, or heat. This is called neuropathy. Second, it can lower the blood flow to your feet, making it much harder for small cuts or sores to heal. When these two problems combine, a small injury can quickly turn into a serious health issue.

Why Foot Care is Important

Taking care of your feet every day is the best way to prevent serious complications. Without proper care, you are at a higher risk for ulcers (deep sores) and infections. In severe cases, these infections can lead to the need for amputation (removing a toe, foot, or leg). The good news is that most of these problems are preventable with simple daily habits.

Warning Signs: When to See a Doctor

Check your feet every day. If you notice any of the following, contact your doctor immediately:

  • Redness or swelling that does not go away.
  • Cuts, blisters, or wounds that are not healing.
  • Numbness, tingling, or a burning sensation in your feet.
  • Discharge or a foul smell coming from a sore.
  • Blackening of the skin in any area.

Daily Foot Care Tips

Follow this simple checklist every day to keep your feet healthy:

  • Wash daily: Use lukewarm water and mild soap. Always test the water temperature with your elbow first.
  • Dry carefully: Gently pat your feet dry, making sure to dry the skin between your toes.
  • Moisturize: Use a good lotion to keep the skin soft, but do not apply it between your toes as this can cause infection.
  • Trim nails: Cut your nails straight across and use an emery board to smooth the corners.
  • Inspect: Look at the tops and bottoms of your feet. Use a mirror or ask a family member for help if you cannot see the soles.

The Do’s and Don’ts

  • ✔ DO: Wear comfortable, well-fitting footwear at all times.
  • ✔ DO: Check the inside of your shoes for pebbles, nails, or rough linings before putting them on.
  • ❌ DON'T: Never walk barefoot, even inside your home or at places of worship.
  • ❌ DON'T: Avoid tight shoes or slippers that pinch your feet.
  • ❌ DON'T: Do not try to cut or treat corns and calluses yourself.

Footwear Advice for Indian Patients

Choosing the right shoes is vital. Use cushioned, closed footwear that protects your entire foot. Avoid high heels and shoes with very hard soles. When wearing socks, choose soft cotton socks that are not too tight around the ankles.

Blood Sugar Control

Maintaining healthy blood sugar levels is the foundation of foot health. When your sugar is under control, your body can heal wounds faster and your nerves stay protected. Follow your doctor's advice on diet and medication strictly.

Regular Check-ups

You should have a professional foot examination at least once a year. If you are at high risk for foot problems, your doctor may want to see you more often.

Emergency Advice

If you find a new wound or if an old one looks worse, do not wait. Seek urgent medical care to prevent the infection from spreading.

Your feet carry you through life. A few minutes of care every day can keep you walking strong and healthy!
